The Lion Sleeps Tonight - most famous example for unfair music business

Posted by Fairmusic Team on August 17th, 2007 under cases | Permalink

The story around the popular hit The Lion Sleeps Tonight is one of the most famous examples for unfairness in the music business. The song, which was originally named Mbube, was first recorded by its writer Solomon Linda and his group The Evening Birds in 1939. Gallo Record Company from Johannesburg, South Africa, paid the artist a single fee for the recording and no royalties. Over the centuries the song had been recorded and performed in variations by numerous musicians and had been used in the Disney movie The Lion King, which caused a lawsuit in 1994.
