A fair music life? Quite our cup of coffee!

Just as soon as the term fairness is applied to the harvesting and consumption of coffee, it is in danger of being appropriated and devalued by the advertising and marketing departments. Therefore, it is high time to apply the concept of fairness to the music industry in order to formulate some new ideas.

Even if it is “just” market interests which are behind the distortion of musical offerings and the manipulation of needs, in its form today this amounts to a kind of de facto censoring of the music. Music is one of the most beautiful and subtle forms of human communication and can, in my opinion, be considered as such when musicians and listeners equally and actively participate in this communicative process. It is necessary to protect this because even the softest, most subtle voices should not be hidden from being noticed. We have right to listen to them.

Wolfgang Seierl works internationally as a painter, musician and composer. He is director of the annual Komponistenforum Mittersill, which he founded in 1996 together with Christian Heindl. He is president of mica - music austria.
