Howard Rheingold: An important Step

Addressing the social and economic dilemmas of digital technologies
While the incumbent music industry has responded to the technology of digital distribution by restricting the rights of music listeners and of artists who build on each other’s work, two needs remain unanswered.
Artists need to be able to make fair use of each other’s work, and musicians need to be fairly compensated for their work. Fair Music Initiative is an important step toward addressing the social and economic dilemmas that digital technologies have enabled.
